Patriotism

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."   When I was young, I remember at the beginning of each class an announcement from the principle proudly spoke over the loudspeaker and said, "We are now going to recite the pledge of allegiance." Our homeroom teacher, along with each student, stood proudly looking at the flag and recited these words. As our hands were over our hearts, we did not question why we did what we did, nor the meaning behind those words. As we celebrate the fourth of July, one word that stood out amongst them all is liberty. What does this word mean and where does it come from? Liberty is the state of being free. This word comes from the many sacrifices that our ancestors have made to make sure each and every one of us has a chance at happiness and success. Mental Health

As I start to open my eyes, I can feel the warmth of the morning sun penetrating through a small crack in one of the tiny blinds. I am happy knowing there is someone special that I can take care of. Although, a question always crosses my mind, "What would I do without her?" Quickly, this question i...

Happy Pride        As we celebrate this month of Pride, are we actually celebrating and including everyone? There are those of us that may have never been to a pride event or even spoken to other gay individuals only to hide away because of fear from the local straights. The fear of being killed because the way of culture and adaptation does not meet with those that might live in the past.     I have lived this earth plenty of years to understand that change must come within. We must change the idea of hate into the idea of love. Sure, there are bumps that must be smooth in order to allow the change that is needed. What must change and who must change is dependent upon the people today and tomorrow. Will we in this century and beyond finally get reconcile and peace or will this train continue to run the same course as it has always run?     We often forget to express empathy for all of those around us. Yes, speaking as a gay man, I often see the b...
