Patriotism

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

When I was young, I remember at the beginning of each class an announcement from the principle proudly spoke over the loudspeaker and said, "We are now going to recite the pledge of allegiance." Our homeroom teacher, along with each student, stood proudly looking at the flag and recited these words. As our hands were over our hearts, we did not question why we did what we did, nor the meaning behind those words.

As we celebrate the fourth of July, one word that stood out amongst them all is liberty. What does this word mean and where does it come from? Liberty is the state of being free. This word comes from the many sacrifices that our ancestors have made to make sure each and every one of us has a chance at happiness and success. It is knowing that you have the opportunity to thrive within a country of greatness, whether or not you came from such country. It is knowing that freedom, although not cheap, was respected by all. Lastly, it is honoring all soldiers and veterans alike because of the sacrifices they made.

This word, like so many others, have been thrown into the lion's den and torn apart from limb to limb. Just like a lion's den, chaos sometimes is met. The hate for one another has increased over the years and we have forgotten to love one another. Instead, we hate on one another without thinking. We have forgotten what made this country a great place.

Americans and non-American's have fought alongside each other to fight the oppression of slavery, the right to be LGBTQIA Plus, a womans right to one simple vote, as well as many other brave fights. The battles were not just being fought at home but in the world wars and other battles during the years. The sacrifices that were made are being slowly faded away by the hatred that the elites have blinded the people with.

As an American, I do not have such hatred in my heart. When I look at another human, whether they are from this country or another, I do not have such hate. I have been taught, from a young age to love with my heart and not hate with my mind. A lesson that needs to be taught today. We must purge the hate of yesterday and begin to heal with understanding and hope.

Today, while some Americans can process the word liberty off of their tongues, others suffer without the ability to pursue happiness. As old stories fade and new stories arise of death and destruction, across the land, some do not celebrate this day. Some are afraid to live, to dream, or even to walk outside because of what may become of them. The third eye of many has opened up to this and are willing to fight again to make this country safe and habitable for our fellow humans. What kind of world have we created to instill such fear amongst those that want to live.

I still celebrate this day because I have hope that one day, hope will overcome fear. It will take fear and throw it against the rocks, and we will never hear from it again. One day, we will get back to the foundations that our forefathers have so long fought for. That day when three parties, Democrats, Republicans, and independents, did not fight one another, but fight for the protection and freedom of the people.

And just like the very first flag and the very first fight, I have hope that we will overcome our differences by celebrating our achievements, no matter how big or small. The kind of hope that when you see a flower you know that it will grow strong. The kind of hope that you know one day will transcend past all borders. This is the hope and the life that I believe will become of America and any neighboring countries. The world as united as the stars upon the flag. A new song will rise upon the mouths of the young and old, and we will hold hands instead of signs of hatred.

So, when you watch the fireworks, no matter where you are, remember what the word liberty instills. Wrap the word within your heart and let it beat loud and proud. Stand up for the weak and stand by your fellow humans. Do not listen to the hatred that crawls out of the mouths of those aimed to hurt everyone around. Remember the fallen soldiers that fought for freedom of not just you but all, no matter the skin color, sexual orientation, etc. Do not judge based on the look of a person, but by their character of heart. Do not forget to celebrate alongside one another because we are brothers and sisters of the same stars and universe. Our journey may be different, but our birth to this world is the same. Lastly, do not forget the brave men and woman that fought to bring the liberty and peace that you hold in your hands.
