Mental Health

As I start to open my eyes, I can feel the warmth of the morning sun penetrating through a small crack in one of the tiny blinds. Like a small laser, the bright light illuminates towards my pillow and onto my tired eyes. This small light as it were, gave me enough energy to rise half of my body. After sitting on the couch for a few minutes to try and not fall back asleep, I took a long stretch. A stretch so big that all the blood from the night finally started to flow throughout my body, instead of lying dormant like a zombie. "This day, unlike previous days, will be the beginning of wonderful adventures", I begin to tell myself as I am greeted by my wonderful dog who jumped on the bed for her morning routine of song and play.

As we begin to play, I am reminded that life is more of what we make it. I am happy knowing there is someone special that I can take care of. Although, a question always crosses my mind, "What would I do without her?" Quickly, this question is tossed aside to concentrate on her favorite toy and the tug-o-war game she began with me. The pure joy that I get watching her be happy fills me up with hope that I am a great dog owner. This all takes place of course, when she jumped on the bed.

After the long tug-o war game, of which she won, we get out of bed to make our way to the kitchen for a bite to eat. Of course, as I get closer to the kitchen, I feel a hint of air brush along the back of my leg. As I look to see what it could have been, there she was standing proudly at her bowl. A smile on her face so big and a repeating to wag her fluffy white tail, she knew she will be the first to eat before all else is done. So, with that, I scooped out a fresh cup of food for her and filled her water bowl with fresh clean water. Something about watching her eat puts another smile on my face. I know that she is happy with me. I give her a kiss on the forehead before I start to cook myself breakfast.

Now, it is my turn to figure out what I was going to cook myself. The mind can wonder when the stomach rumbles. Today, I decide on something simple to ease my stomach pains. I decided to make some plain oatmeal with some eggs. This sounds like a huge meal but can be quite nutritious.

After, making eggs and oatmeal with honey, I decide to eat in the living room where me and my dog can watch the television. My dog loves anything nature because she is fascinated by the animals. The smooth and calm voice also helps her fall fast asleep.

As we are laying on the couch together, many memories begin to run through my head about how she has saved me in more ways than one. I remember the main reason why I had gotten her and how those reasons have multiplied throughout the time that we have been together. I might have gotten her at a time I was vulnerable, but she has proven that there are many reasons to get a pet for your own health. There are many reasons that may be chosen in owning a pet but here are the top three that I want to cover. The top three reason to own a pet are as follows: You will never be lonely, your days will become brighter, and lastly, your mental health will greatly improve over the years. These reasons may seem small compared to many, but faith has taught me to trust certain things before judgement occurs.

The first reason to own a pet is how you will never be lonely. Humans often, never talk about loneliness. This epidemic has spread throughout the years like a plaque. Our mental health can decline and some may attempt fates that are too graphic to talk about (will discuss this topic in another post).

Throughout my life, I have often found myself without anyone to talk to. There are many people who belittle you over this topic but more often than not, it is true for most of us. How are we supposed to make friends when the world has changed on what is a friend indeed. That is another topic that can be discussed in a later series. The main point is that there are people who prefer to belittle those without money instead of giving them a chance to become friends. Does not mean that I will not try to still make friends.

So, why is a dog a better choice? Dogs are essentially non-judgmental towards anyone unless harmed. Unlike humans, pets do not judge your appearance, how much money you make, or the validity of your truth. Dogs have a way to help you forget that you are lonely. First, they make sure to grab all your attention so you cannot think of nothing else, especially if the negative crosses your mind. Secondly, they will always be by your side to remind you that you are protected and part of their pack. Finally, having a dog play a simple game of tug-o-war with their favorite toy will bring the kind of joy you been longing in your lifetime.

The second reason that you should get a dog is your days will be brighter. I have touched a little bit on this in the first reason but let's explore further. How does a dog make your day brighter? First, the game of tug-o-war that we have talked about previously. Close your eyes and imagine a time you were upset about a day that you had. Maybe you were sad or maybe you were mad. Either of these situations can work. The game of tug-o-war can be destressing for both you and the dog. As you play, your mind becomes a little lighter and you forget why you were mad. As you look at your dog, a smile begins to emerge upon your face. You have successfully become more happier than ever before.

Now, let us imagine this scenario but without a dog. As humans, we often would cry, drink, or throw things because we are mad. This is unhealthy because it can take a toll on our minds and bodies. A mind that is alone is a dangerous mind. We often tend to overthink, and this can more stress than we had intended. As someone who has dealt with this type of overthinking, I am happy to inform anyone about getting a pet to alleviate the anxiety of the world.

Lastly, your mental health will greatly improve. If you are thinking that the previous reasons are the same as the last reason, you are correct. All of these reasons can combine to help your mental health. You do not need to be going through a tough time to own a dog to increase your mental health. Owning a dog can still impact your life to where you are much happier than previously before no matter the situation in life. Not only will this increase your mentality but also will help a dog as well. How, you might be wondering? They will appreciate the love and loyalty that any owner has to spare. A dogs lineage dates back to wolves, which are known to be natural pack animals. So, once you are in their pack, you are their lifeline.

In conclusion, our mental health can improve if we let it improve. We do not have to wait for this to happen. The options are there for us to choose if we want it. One of these options is to go to a local shelter and adopt.  You are stronger than you give yourself credit for. Go out and adopt a dog today and you will not regret it. Love and peace to all my followers. Stay safe and I hope that you enjoy this post.
